Happy holidays and hello to 2018
Happy new year
Best wishes in 2018
Many people seem to regard 2017 as a year of celebrity deaths and tough politics. I remember my first American election. I had just turned 18 a few weeks prior. George W. Bush's was elected to office. Life went on. When I wrote the first notes that would become the song In Cuauhtémoc, I was taking Spanish classes in Mexico City a couple months after the presidential inauguration. My teacher joked with the other students that politics in Mexico had been this way for seventy-five years, and welcome to the club.
For me, my year was focused less on politics and more on making as much music as I could.
I managed to release Everyone's Okay, which was largely recorded in 2016, and to record and release Parque México and In Cuauhtémoc, and I have three or four full reels of 2" tape sitting on the shelves at Tiny Telephone waiting for Beau's schedule to free up to finish one or two more albums for 2018. In addition, I've managed to write plenty more material. I've began to experiment even further with instruments that I can use on airplanes and in hotel rooms.
I'd like to thank everyone who continues to help me make music: John Vanderslice for keeping Tiny Telephone in such good shape and for being a good friend, Beau Sorenson and Maryam Qudus who have given me an amazing education in the analog studio world. Thank you to Jakob Winik and Bob Weston for mastering my music. Thank you to Heather Peirce for being a friend and for being patient in teaching me how to use my voice. Thanks to everyone who played or sang with me in 2017.
I can't wait to keep making and sharing beautiful music. I am just getting started.
